Divine Intelligence In Life: Witnessing God’s Work Through Technology

Have you noticed or realized that many forms of technology we use every day are connected to God’s innovative and active works in the world we live today? We might have taken technology for granted; in a way, it is rightly so, because technology has been granted to us to make our lives easier, helping us live, survive, and thrive.

As a Christian scientist and engineer, I believe that God’s work can be seen through technology. By a simple, AI-generated definition, technology is the “art of knowing and doing” where scientific knowledge, skills, methods, and processes are applied to practical aims, solving problems, and/or extending human capabilities [Reference: Gemini].

In this modern life, we often use technology (e.g., Internet, GPS, smartphones, electronic devices, and home appliances—to name a few) without really understanding how things work behind the scenes. Yes, we may know how to operate them, but we might not necessarily understand the working mechanisms or principles of all these technologies. (If we knew them fully and well, we would have created them ourselves and solved their problems every time without asking help from an expert or a technician, right?)

I am a user or an operator of all the above-mentioned technologies, but of course I don’t know how to create or make them myself. Yet I have also never seen a person can build or manufacture any of those technologies singlehandedly. This means each of those technologies can only exist because of collective efforts of some (or many) individuals who are smart enough to make it happen. Who gave them the smart brains? Of course, if you asked a person of faith, the answer would be “God did.”

God is the source of all knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. He gives human beings—made in His image—the abilities to know, to understand, to discern, and to create something for the good of humanity and all His creation, reflecting His glory.

In this article, I would briefly highlight some of the technologies that, from my perspective, reflect the work and mind of God as revealed in the Scriptures and the patterns shown therein.

Interconnected network (Internet) as a powerful means of global evangelism

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Matthew 28:18-20

Have you wondered, when Jesus made the above statement (or revelation), how the disciples reacted? The Internet did not yet exist, so how were they going to share the gospel to ALL nations? If I were one of the disciples, I would have probably asked Jesus, “How, Lord?” in my response to His commands. The means of communication were limited, and so were the means of transportation. But Jesus knew it’s possible to reach the entire world with the gospel, therefore He gave the Great Commission. Fast forward (nearly 2,000 years later), we who live now know this global evangelism is possible with the Internet technology, allowing the virtual presence of the ones who bring this good news. Even if the messengers had long gone, the messages can still be heard and bring people to saving faith in Jesus. By giving this command, Jesus was foretelling the worldwide evangelism that we are witnessing today. It is a clear example of God fulfilling His purpose in the world through technology.

Artificial intelligence (AI) which reflects a divine creative power

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.

Psalm 33:6,9

I remember it was in 2023 when I started using a generative AI chatbot to facilitate my research. Prior to that, I used search engines to find ideas or inspirations for my scientific and/or artistic works. Soon after benefiting from AI (almost daily), I realized that AI affirms the Creator’s ability to create things by commands. With AI, our creative abilities are empowered dramatically—we can now create articles, pictures, videos, designs, and many others faster than ever. With AI, our learning capabilities are also enhanced significantly. By a definition, AI is a branch of computer science that enables machines to simulate human cognition, including learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and creative thinking through methods such as machine learning (training on data) and deep learning (using neural networks that mimic human brain) [Reference: Gemini]. Humans are good at imitating and learning from the creation. AI gives us a glimpse of God’s creative power in nature when He spoke things into existence. If we are honest, we should not deny the existence of divine intelligence of the Intelligent Designer, from whom we receive inspiration, wisdom, enlightenment, and creativity.

Global positioning system (GPS) as our guide and companion in life’s journeys

When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.

John 16:13

One piece of technology that I’m very grateful for is GPS. Without it, I would have not driven as far as I have done—outside the city and even the country. GPS, originally invented to improve military navigation, has commonly been used for transportation, utilizing satellites to communicate precise time and location data. Because of GPS, transportation and delivery services have become more efficient, resulting in economic improvement. While driving using GPS, I was reminded of the role of the Holy Spirit in my life—giving me directions to my destinations and even corrections when I was going astray. With a voice command technology, I did not even need to touch my screen to activate it, which reminded me of God’s commanding ability through His words. Travelling to unfamiliar places is no longer a scary thing to do as it was in the past—thanks to the GPS (and the Holy Spirit, of course). As I navigate this life filled with uncertainties and unexpected circumstances, what I need to do is to trust and obey the directions and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Trusting His way—not my way—leads me safely to the destination.

Smart electronic device which gives a sense of God’s powerful hands and eyes

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for He founded it on the seas and established it on the waters. In His hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to Him.

Psalm 24:1-2; 95:4

Where/how can we access all the above-mentioned technologies? You know the answer. Through smart electronic device, such as phone, TV, or computer, we can now “see” the world in our hands. Scripture reveals that God holds the whole world in His hands and we are given a “taste” of holding the world in our hands through these electronic devices. His eyes also keep on roaming throughout the earth (2 Chronicles 16:9) and, again, we could already experience a fraction of this vision power when we see things or events that happen in the world—even those in remote places—every day if we like. No wonder if people say, “The world is getting smaller and smaller.” It is another obvious example of God demonstrating His power through technology—built and developed by humans (His image bearers). And the beauty of it is that God allows us to taste, see, and feel what He has achieved for the good of all mankind. Because of these electronic devices, especially smartphones and computers, we can now transact and travel farther than our ancestors did. Sending money, buying/selling stuff, and travelling places internationally are all possible—thanks to [God who enables human beings to invent and develop] technology.

Integrated technology which equips us with everything we need to live well

But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

1 John 2:27

When we combine all the above technologies, we may soon realize that we can now learn about anything ourselves. Acquiring new skills and mastering old skills are all within our reach; it’s true especially when we have enough time, energy, and motivation. Not to mention the cloud technology, which helps us store, organize, and transfer/exchange all the information. There is no doubt that, because of the increase learning capabilities, knowledge and understanding will only increase in the coming years. Hidden things will soon be revealed, and vague things made clear. This, again, reminded me of the Holy Spirit’s work: He is able to teach us all things that we need to know on this side of eternity. Of course, I am not at all suggesting that technology can replace the Holy Spirit. Creation can never replace the Creator, and we must only worship the Creator, not the creation. What I am highlighting is God’s work demonstrated through this integrated technology that brings us good things necessary for our developments and accomplishments.

Conclusions:

Scripture reveals that God, by His divine power, has granted us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him (2 Peter 1:3) and equipped us with everything good for doing His will (Hebrews 13:21). Here, we can see that everything includes technology. Every good and perfect gift comes from God (James 1:17).

So, can technology help people know God and do His will? The answer is a resounding yes! In fact, I’ve heard some Christians believe that soon AI will affirm that Jesus is God, in a way bringing us a step closer into fulfilling what has long been foretold that “every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” (Philippians 2:10-11)

Technology is intended for our good, but in a wrong hand, it can be an instrument of evil for wickedness; therefore, we must use it carefully—and examine our motives—to honor God and bless others. Importantly, we all should be grateful for all the technologies we can use for free—as long as there is an electronic device and an internet access—without toil and pain. To me, it is a practical example of how “all things work together for our good.” (Romans 8:28)

Then, it is true what the Bible says (as the Apostle Paul wrote it): “For from Him and through Him and for Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen.” (Romans 11:36)

So, after reading this post, what are your thoughts? Do you agree that God’s work can be clearly seen in/through technology? If you think technology reflects God’s mind and reveals His fingerprints, what are other examples that you can think of? I sincerely appreciate your comments. May God bless you as you use His technological gifts wisely for His glory.
