The Triune God’s Roles in the Christian Life

There are many religions or belief systems in this world. In a pluralistic country like Indonesia, where I grew up, there are six officially recognized religions: Islam, Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. In general, these religions arguably share one thing in common, that is a belief in a supreme being—the source and creator of all things—although the nature or identity of that supreme being is not the same or believed differently.

As a person of faith, regardless of our religion, I believe that we need to examine this fundamental question: “Who is God and what have my God done that has caused me to trust in Him?” In this post, I would like to concisely answer this question from my Christian perspective.

A fundamental aspect of Christian faith is belief in the triune God. The word Trinity is not found in the Bible, but it is a central Christian doctrine defining God as three distinct persons—the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit—who share one essence, nature, or substance, working together as a “tri-fold” unity rather than three separate gods. Trinity is derived from Latin trinitas (“three-fold”), which represents the state of being three [persons] in one [being] (reference: Google AI).

Now, let us take a closer look at the distinct roles of these three divine Persons, that I believe are significant for our understanding, affection, adoration, and faith in the One true God.

God the Father: Our PROVIDER

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of lights [the Creator and Sustainer of the heavens], in whom there is no variation [no rising or setting] or shadow cast by His turning [for He is perfect and never changes].

James 1:17, AMP

God the Father is the source of every blessing in our life. He provides all our needs according to the riches of His glory (Philippians 4:19). Our greatest need is for salvation, which He has provided through His Son, Jesus Christ, as the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). God the Father is the Planner of our salvation, and He [gladly] executed this plan by offering His Son to rescue humanity from sin, evil, and death (Isaiah 53:10). This providing God (Jehovah Jireh) is our heavenly Father who has demonstrated His love for us, sinners, by not sparing His Son, but delivering Him up for us, so we can rest assured that He will grant us everything else (Romans 8:32). The Father’s heart is to give His children the best out of the abundance of His love, grace, and mercy. God passionately demonstrates His love for us, although He doesn’t actually need or owe anything to us, because all things are from Him and through Him and for Him—the One who ultimately deserves all glory and honor (Romans 11:36).

God the Son: Our RESCUER

For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.

Luke 19:10, NLT

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to this world to reveal God to humanity. He is the exact representation, visible image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15), through whom humanity can know God’s nature [characters and attributes] and have a love relationship with Him. Jesus Christ, the Son of Man, came to this world to identify Himself with humanity and show us how a man can live for God with complete submission and utmost devotion (Philippians 2:6-8). The name of Jesus Christ literally means “the Lord, Anointed One, saves.” He is the Anointed One favored and given by God to save humanity from their sins (John 3:16, Matthew 1:21) through His death on the cross, taking their punishment on Him (Isaiah 53:5). The [innocent] man Jesus Christ is the [only] one mediator who can reconcile God and humanity (1 Timothy 2:5). Jesus was foreordained [chosen by God] before the foundation of the world to redeem His people with His own blood, so we can live with meaning and purpose for the glory of God (1 Peter 1:18-21).

God the Spirit: Our SANCTIFIER

But we should always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.

2 Thessalonians 2:13, NASB

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God (or the Spirit of Christ) who sets us apart for His purpose. The Spirit of truth is our Helper, who sanctifies us by the word of truth (John 17:17), convicting us about our sin and our need for a Savior (John 16:8), teaching us all things (John 14:26), and enabling us to live in accordance to His will and transforming us into Christlikeness (2 Corinthians 3:18). We can put our faith in the Lord Jesus and call God our “Abba, Father” because of the Holy Spirit’s work in our hearts (1 Corinthians 12:3, Romans 8:15). Our body is a temple [a sacred dwelling place] for the Holy Spirit, which means that our life is not our own (1 Corinthians 6:19). We belong to God and are sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14) as the guarantee of all that God has for us. The Holy Spirit will cause us to live with power [ability, desire, courage, boldness], not just to live a holy life, but also to tell the world about Jesus (Acts 1:8) and glorify Christ (John 16:13-14). The Holy Spirit gives resurrection power and life in us (Romans 8:11), so we shall live and never die (John 11:25-26).

Summary: The Triune God’s Role in Our Life

We have seen the roles of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit in our life as believers. These roles reveal who God is (His nature) and what He does (His work). The heavenly Father brings PROVISION, Jesus Christ brings REDEMPTION, and the Holy Spirit brings SANCTIFICATION.

There are many other divine roles that I have not mentioned here but let me highlight one more specific role the triune God is doing in our life: INTERCESSION (Romans 8:26-27, Romans 8:34, Hebrews 7:25). This means the Father, the Son, and the Spirit are always in perfect communion and in continuous conversation with each other. Isn’t it amazing that God intercedes for you and me? We are in God’s mind. Rest assured, you and I are not alone. God cares and He is with us.

God’s ultimate desire is to give us LIFE, because He is [the source of] LIFE and apart from Him we cannot live. This is why Scripture clearly reveals that Jesus Christ has come to give LIFE that is abundant and everlasting (John 10:10, John 6:40, John 5:24). The invisible God sent His Son—the Word became flesh—as an invitation for everyone to understand truth and accept His gift of salvation (1 Timothy 2:3-4).

Application: Living by Faith and Gratitude

Now that we know God has done so many great things in our life, how can we still doubt His love? We now know that our life is surrounded by LOVE, why do we still live in fear? Having seen the distinct roles and active works of the triune God, we know that God’s desire is always for our good and for His glory (it’s not a selfishness because He alone is worthy of it all). This reason alone is enough for us to [gladly and continually] put our faith in Him and give thanks to Him in all circumstances. Indeed, God is good and faithful.

And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.

Romans 8:28, AMP

Finally, here is my challenge to you: If you are Christians, please consider writing down about who Jesus Christ is and what He has done for you—in your personal life. If you are non-Christians, please consider writing down about who your God is and what He has done for you that has caused you to trust in Him. Thank you for reading and hope you are blessed.
